Biden’s Knowledge Acknowledged? GOP Highlights White House’s Hunter Denial Change.
House Republican leaders have made a stunning allegation in a letter, claiming that the White House has significantly narrowed its denials regarding President Joe Biden’s involvement in his son Hunter Biden’s foreign business deals.
White House spokesman Ian Sams made statements on June 23 and June 29, asserting that “the president was not in business with his son.” This statement represents a “clear shift” from the White House’s previous messaging, as outlined in the letter by Republican Reps. Elise Stefanik (N.Y.), Jim Jordan (Ohio), James Comer (Ky.), and Jason Smith (Mo.).
Joe Biden has consistently denied any involvement, stating in 2019 that ”I’ve never spoken to my son about his overseas business dealings.” White House officials affirm that the president stands by this claim.
However, mounting evidence of Biden’s proximity to his son’s business dealings has made his blanket denial increasingly difficult to maintain.
In closed-door congressional testimony on June 22, a whistleblower revealed that Hunter Biden, in a 2017 text, threatened a Chinese business partner by invoking Joe Biden’s name. Photos showed that Hunter Biden was at his father’s house when he sent the text, as reported by the Washington Free Beacon. At the time, Hunter Biden and his father shared office space in Washington, D.C., with their Chinese partners, according to emails from Hunter’s abandoned laptop.
It was the day after this whistleblower’s testimony that Sams first made the statement about Joe Biden not being involved in ”business with his son.”
When questioned by a reporter on July 5, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre affirmed that Biden’s statement about not discussing business with his son “stands,” but declined to provide further comment.
As the weeks pass, Biden’s blanket denial becomes increasingly difficult to defend.
The letter from House Republicans coincided with Senator Chuck Grassley (R., Iowa) releasing an FBI report on allegations that a Ukrainian energy executive paid $10 million in bribes to Joe and Hunter Biden. IRS whistleblowers testified this month that the Biden administration’s Justice Department obstructed their investigation into Hunter Biden.
In their letter to White House lawyers, the lawmakers inquire whether the administration is now admitting that President Biden was aware of and involved in Hunter Biden’s foreign business dealings, and if the president received financial compensation for his involvement.
“The American people must have confidence that the President of the United States is not compromised by foreign interests,” the Republicans wrote.
The White House did not respond to a request for comment.
