Lisa Murkowski supports Joe Manchin over both Joe Biden and Donald Trump for the 2024 election.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski ‍Open to Voting for Sen. ⁢Joe ⁢Manchin in 2024 Presidential Election

Sen. Lisa Murkowski ‌(R-AK) has‍ expressed⁣ her willingness to cross⁣ party lines and support Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) in the 2024 presidential election if the race comes⁢ down to⁢ President Joe‍ Biden and former President Donald⁤ Trump. ‌In an interview with PBS’s‍ Firing Line with Margaret Hoover, Murkowski discussed her thoughts on Manchin’s potential bid on the‌ No⁣ Labels ticket.

Murkowski’s comments come as Washington‍ eagerly awaits Manchin’s decision on whether ⁤he will run for president in ‌2024. As ⁣a Democrat facing⁣ a tough reelection fight in a predominantly⁣ Republican⁢ state,⁣ Manchin has been a subject of⁤ speculation. ⁢He has also been⁢ a strong advocate for the⁣ creation ‍of‍ a⁤ third-party presidential ticket through the centrist group No Labels.

“If it’s a matchup between Biden and Trump, I know exactly where I’d go. I would go‍ with Joe Manchin,” Murkowski stated when asked about⁣ her support for ⁣Manchin’s 2024 bid. She emphasized her desire⁤ to be proactive‍ in⁣ choosing a candidate rather⁤ than settling for the lesser of‍ two ⁤evils. Murkowski believes ‌that Manchin ‌is capable of doing the job, but questions whether‌ the current system would allow for his candidacy.

When asked about⁢ the‍ potential impact of ⁣Manchin’s candidacy on Trump’s chances, Murkowski highlighted the need for alternatives in a scenario where the race is a ⁢repeat of the 2020 election. She expressed that people are hungry for a candidate who offers something in the middle, rather than having to choose between‍ the same two ‍options.

Murkowski also ⁢discussed the ⁣interest among‍ Alaskans in convincing Manchin‍ to run and the potential ⁣benefits of a third-party⁣ candidate. She acknowledged that previous attempts by wealthy individuals ⁤to fund their own⁤ races as independents were not⁢ successful,‌ but ⁢suggested that the current political climate ‌may be more favorable.

“I would‌ really have to do some serious evaluation”⁢ to determine if ‌a Manchin third-party ticket could lead to Trump’s‌ return to the White House, Murkowski admitted. Her decision‍ would involve careful consideration of⁤ the potential consequences.

Murkowski, a ⁤lifelong‌ Republican, has had a complicated relationship⁢ with Trump. While she voted to acquit him during his first‌ impeachment trial, she frequently voiced her concerns about his behavior throughout his presidency. Her formal break with Trump came ⁢after he refused to⁣ concede the 2020 ⁣election and she ultimately voted‍ to convict him at his second Senate ‌impeachment trial following the Capitol riot.

In the aftermath of the insurrection, Murkowski ‌questioned whether the Republican‍ Party was still the right ⁣fit‍ for⁤ her. Her criticism⁢ drew Trump’s attention, leading him to support a primary challenger in her most recent Senate race. However, Murkowski emerged victorious with a comfortable⁤ margin of ⁤over 7 points.

Murkowski’s ⁤political⁣ career has been notable. She was first elected in 2002 and made history ⁣in 2010 by winning her reelection through a‍ write-in ⁢campaign, becoming the first senator in over 50 years to achieve such a⁤ feat.
