Christian coach sues school after being fired for stating truth about trans athletes.
A Christian Coach Fights Back After Being Fired for Speaking Out About Transgender Athletes
A Christian high school coach is taking legal action against the Vermont school district that terminated his employment after he engaged in a discussion with students about the competitive advantage that male athletes claiming to be female have over their female counterparts. David Bloch, who has been a coach for the snowboarding team at Woodstock Union High School for over a decade, filed a lawsuit on Monday in the U.S. District Court for the District of Vermont.
In the lawsuit, Bloch alleges that he was fired after participating in a conversation with several students about a transgender snowboarder competing against girls at another school. He expressed the view that males and females have different biological characteristics and that these differences give males an advantage in athletic competitions. Bloch emphasized that he was not referring to any specific student during the conversation.
The lawsuit claims that Bloch was confronted by the superintendent of the Windsor Central Supervisory Union, Sherry Sousa, the day after the discussion took place and was immediately terminated, despite the fact that the investigation into the incident had just begun. Sousa also informed Bloch that he would be barred from any future coaching positions within the district.
“The notice accused Bloch of violating Windsor Central Supervisory Union Board’s Harassment, Hazing, and Bullying policy and the Vermont Principals’ Association related policy for ‘ma[king] reference to [a] student in a manner that questioned the legitimacy and appropriateness of the student competing on the girls’ team to members of the WUHS snowboard team,’” ADF said in its release.
Bloch, a practicing Catholic, believes that God created males and females with immutable sex and that there are only two sexes based on scientific evidence. He argues that his firing violates his First Amendment rights of freedom of speech and freedom of religion.
This incident is not the first of its kind in Vermont. Just last month, a middle school volleyball coach and his daughter were awarded $125,000 after the Orange Southwest School District fired him and subjected his daughter to harassment for expressing their opposition to a boy who identifies as a girl using the girls’ locker rooms.
As clashes between liberal school districts and individuals who oppose transgenderism continue to escalate, the national discussion surrounding this issue shows no signs of abating.
