Special Counsel Jack Smith in Contact with Republican Governor – Will He Roll on Trump?
Special Counsel Jack Smith has reached out to Republican Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp regarding the investigation into former President Donald Trump’s attempts to overturn the 2020 election.
“I can confirm our office has been contacted by Jack Smith’s office, but we will decline to comment further at this time,” said Andrew Isenhour, spokesman for Kemp, in a statement to the Daily Caller News Foundation.
This marks the first communication between Kemp’s office and Smith as part of this investigation, as reported by The Washington Post.
Following the 2020 election, Trump personally called Kemp in an attempt to convince him to call a special session of the state legislature to overturn President Joe Biden’s narrow victory in Georgia, according to NBC News.
“I’ll be here in about a year and a half campaigning against your governor,” Trump boldly declared during a 2021 rally in Georgia. “I guarantee it.”
On Tuesday, Trump revealed that Smith had sent him a “target letter” related to the investigation into his actions following the 2020 election.
The letter indicated that Trump could potentially face criminal charges, suggesting an imminent indictment.
The target letter cited three statutes, including “conspiracy to commit offense or to defraud the United States,” “civil rights conspiracy charge,” and “tampering with a witness, victim or informant,” as reported by unnamed sources to ABC News.
Smith’s investigation into the events leading up to the Jan. 6 Capitol riot and the efforts to overturn the 2020 election results is extensive, according to The Washington Post.
The Department of Justice has not yet responded to the DCNF’s request for comment.
