Manchin: U.S. Too Divided, People Feel Politically Homeless
Sen. Joe Manchin: United States “Not Designed” for Division
In a recent interview, Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) expressed his belief that the United States was “not designed” for the level of division currently seen within the country. He argued that this division has left many “common-sense” Americans without a political home.
During an appearance on WABC 770 AM’s “The Cats Roundtable” talk show, Manchin discussed his openness to a third-party run for president in 2024. He pointed out that the problem lies with the political parties in Washington, D.C., rather than average citizens.
“The political parties have become so extreme — going to the extreme left and extreme right — that the average common-sense people don’t have a home,” Manchin told host John Catsimatidis.
“They’ve been left politically homeless.”
Manchin’s comments were prompted by his recent appearance at a No Labels forum in New Hampshire, where he did not rule out a potential run for president. He emphasized that the purpose of the group is “to make sure the American people have an option.”
During the interview, Manchin reiterated his belief that the United States was “not designed to be this divided.” He placed the blame on the political parties in Washington, stating:
“The people of America aren’t divided. The people in New York aren’t divided, or in West Virginia. It’s basically the political parties in Washington with their business model that they get better returns and their business does much better when you’re fighting and dividing each other versus uniting each other.”
As a former governor of West Virginia, Manchin argued that Washington is tainted by party division and expressed his comfort in occupying the middle ground.
He emphasized the need for another choice beyond the extreme left and right, stating:
“You should have another choice to where it makes them understand and realize they might not be in the majority — even though they think they are — they might not be.”
While Manchin has yet to announce his plans for re-election, West Virginia Governor Jim Justice, a Republican, has already launched a campaign for Manchin’s Senate seat. Some Democrats are concerned that a third-party run from Manchin could potentially draw votes away from President Joe Biden, impacting their preferred candidate’s chances of keeping the White House.
At the No Labels forum, Manchin expressed his determination to “save the nation” and assured attendees that if he enters a race, he intends to win.
