DOJ orders Texas to remove ‘illegal’ border barriers; Abbott delivers strong reply.
Texas Takes Control of Border Security, Faces Opposition from Federal Government
Texas has reclaimed the security of its international border with Mexico, asserting its authority in the face of a federal government that seems uninterested in enforcing national sovereignty and protecting the nation’s frontier. This bold move has put the Lone Star State at odds with the federal government.
A recent letter from the Department of Justice (DOJ) addressed to Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Angela Colmenero, the state’s interim attorney general, accuses Texas of violating federal law and endangering the public and environment with the construction of barriers along the border.
The barriers in question are part of a floating buoy system that Texas officials began installing on July 7. Governor Abbott shared a video of the buoys being unloaded from a truck, showcasing the state’s commitment to securing the border.

On July 13, Governor Abbott provided an update on the ongoing construction of the barrier, reaffirming Texas’ determination to address the border crisis using every available tool and strategy.

The DOJ’s letter, dated July 20, accuses Texas of unlawful construction and violating federal law with the floating barriers in the Rio Grande River. The DOJ argues that the barriers obstruct navigation, pose risks to public safety and the environment, and interfere with the federal government’s duties.
Citing the Rivers and Harbors Act, the DOJ demands the immediate removal of the barriers to restore the navigability of the waterway.
Despite the threat of legal action, Governor Abbott remains steadfast in his commitment to defend Texas’ border. He asserts that Texas has the sovereign authority to protect its border under the U.S. Constitution and the Texas Constitution, and has previously communicated this authority to the Biden Administration.
Abbott blames President Biden’s refusal to secure the border for the humanitarian crisis and encourages migrants to cross illegally through the Rio Grande instead of using legal means of entry.
While the White House’s efforts to address the border crisis have been largely ineffective, Texas has taken the lead in defending its people and land. Border communities and even areas further inland are bearing the burden of this crisis, with little outside assistance.
The practice of shuffling immigrants around the country, favored by the White House, is causing problems in areas that were previously unaffected by the border crisis. Violent crimes committed by illegal immigrants, including murder, are on the rise in states far from the border.
In response to the threat of legal action, Governor Abbott defiantly declares, “We will see you in court, Mr. President.”
