White House focuses on DeSantis before Emmett Till monument decision.

The White House Criticizes⁤ Gov. Ron DeSantis over Education Policy

The⁢ White House⁢ on Monday lashed out at⁢ Gov. Ron DeSantis⁤ (R-FL) over education policy.

Biden to⁤ Establish National Monument Honoring ‍Emmett Till

President ‍Joe Biden will ‌establish a national monument dedicated ⁢to the memory of Emmett ⁣Till and his mother on Tuesday. In announcing the move, press ‌secretary Karine Jean-Pierre took the opportunity to criticize school history standards in Florida.

“Let’s not forget what we have seen ‌these past several months as we witness extreme officials ‌in Florida and⁤ across the country lie about American‌ history,” she said. “The most recent example shamefully ‍promotes a lie that enslaved people actually benefited from slavery.”

Vice President Kamala Harris made similar remarks late last week‌ during a speech in Florida, saying, “They want to replace ⁢history with lies, middle school students in Florida to be told that enslaved people benefited from slavery.”

The Florida Board of Education revised the state’s black ⁤history curriculum last week, with critics saying the new standards whitewash U.S.⁤ history. Chief among the criticisms ‌is that standards require‍ middle schools to teach students that slaves benefited from ⁢skills they learned.

But DeSantis took to Twitter to deny the claims.

“Democrats like Kamala Harris have to lie about Florida’s educational standards to cover for their agenda of indoctrinating students and pushing ‌sexual topics ⁣onto⁤ children,” he wrote. “Florida stands in their‌ way and we will continue to expose their agenda and their lies.”

DeSantis is a 2024 GOP presidential candidate ⁢who has faced⁤ a series of ⁤problems in recent‍ weeks. The campaign maintains, however,‌ that it is‍ the only one capable ⁤of defeating Biden next year.

Though she did not mention DeSantis by name, Jean-Pierre said the new Florida standards were hurtful and insulting.

“The Biden-Harris administration will continue to speak out against hateful attempts to rewrite our history and strongly opposes any actions that threaten to divide us and take our country backwards,” she said.
