Hunter Biden prosecutor to testify before Congress following Republican criticism of plea deal.
Hunter Biden Prosecutor to Testify Before House Judiciary Committee
The House Judiciary Committee will hear testimony from David Weiss, the U.S. Attorney for the District of Delaware and prosecutor in the Hunter Biden case, according to a letter from the Department of Justice.
This comes after the announcement of a plea deal for Hunter Biden, where he would plead guilty to two tax misdemeanors and a gun charge. If accepted by a judge, this deal would likely result in no jail time for the president’s son. Republican lawmakers have criticized the leniency of the deal, prompting Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) to request Weiss’ testimony before Congress.
“The Department of Justice appreciates the Committee on the Judiciary’s acceptance of our offer for U.S. Attorney Weiss to testify at a public hearing,” wrote Assistant Attorney General Carlos Felipe Uriarte in a letter to Jordan.
Potential dates for the testimony have been proposed for September 27 or 28, and October 18 or 19.
The Department of Justice expressed concerns about misunderstandings regarding their work and hopes that Weiss’ testimony will address those concerns. ”We are deeply concerned by any misrepresentations about our work that could harm public confidence in the evenhanded administration of justice,” added Uriarte.
Weiss has faced criticism from IRS whistleblowers who claim that he has not been consistent in his handling of the investigation into Hunter Biden. One whistleblower, Joseph Ziegler, disputes Weiss’ statements and believes that Hunter should face more serious charges.
The second whistleblower, IRS supervisory special agent Gary Shapley, has raised concerns about the unclear charging authority in the investigation. “The story has been changing from the Department of Justice and U.S. Attorney Weiss,” said Shapley during his testimony before Congress.
During the whistleblowers’ testimony, Rep. Jordan criticized Weiss and the DOJ for the apparent change in charging power. “It looks pretty obvious what happened. Initially, everyone was saying Weiss had complete authority. Now suddenly he doesn’t. Because you guys came forward and told the truth,” said Jordan.
