Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ Presidential Campaign Makes Major Changes as Trump Dominates
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ presidential campaign is facing challenges as it struggles to gain traction in the 2024 primary, which has so far been dominated by former President Donald Trump.
Politico reported that the campaign will be cutting more than a third of its staff, amounting to 38 jobs across various departments. This includes the recent departures of two senior campaign advisers, Dave Abrams and Tucker Obenshain, as well as the previously announced elimination of 10 event planning positions.
In a statement, DeSantis campaign manager Generra Peck said, “Following a top-to-bottom review of our organization, we have taken additional, aggressive steps to streamline operations and put Ron DeSantis in the strongest position to win this primary and defeat Joe Biden.”
While some aides will be leaving the campaign staff, they will be joining a pro-DeSantis political group to support the broader effort, according to Politico.
The Trump campaign’s official Twitter account responded to the news, stating, “DESANTIS CAMPAIGN FIRES 38 AS POLLING COLLAPSES.”

According to the RealClear Politics average of polls, Trump currently leads the field of Republican candidates by more than 30 percentage points. He has 52.3 percent support, while DeSantis has 18 percent.
A recent poll by Monmouth University showed Trump ahead of DeSantis by 32 percentage points.

In May, before DeSantis officially announced his presidential bid, several polls showed him with 25 percent support among the primary electorate. A CNN poll conducted in March even had DeSantis beating Trump, 39 to 37 percent.
Trump has not yet decided whether he will participate in the GOP debate on August 23. When asked about it, he said, “When you have a big lead, you don’t do it. We have a lead of 50 and 60 points in some cases. You’re leading people by 50 and 60 points, you say why would you be doing a debate? It’s actually not fair.”

When asked about the risk of not showing up to the debate, Trump responded, “He’s going down and a couple of them are going up.”
As the primary race continues, DeSantis faces an uphill battle to gain ground against the formidable presence of Donald Trump.
