DOJ grants Hunter Biden wide legal immunity in new plea deal.
Hunter Biden Offered Broad Legal Immunity by Department of Justice
The Department of Justice on Wednesday made a stunning offer to Hunter Biden, granting him broad legal immunity from all tax crimes committed between 2014 and 2019, as well as any drug or firearm charges.
This new deal comes swiftly after the collapse of Hunter Biden’s initial plea agreement, which was marred by a series of unusual last-minute disputes between his attorneys and federal prosecutors. In response, Hunter Biden’s attorney, Chris Clark, declared the agreement “null and void” when a top prosecutor stated that it would not provide permanent legal immunity for the first son, as reported by the New York Times.
The success of the revised plea deal now rests on the approval of Judge Maryellen Noreika, who raised concerns about the parameters of the initial agreement. When Noreika probed both legal teams, Hunter Biden’s attorney called off the plea agreement. The court was then recessed to allow the two sides to find a resolution.
Under the original agreement, Hunter Biden was expected to plead guilty to two misdemeanor tax charges for willfully evading income taxes in 2017 and 2018. However, Republicans criticized this deal, labeling it a “sweetheart deal,” especially after testimony from two IRS whistleblowers who claimed that Hunter Biden should have faced felony charges. The updated plea deal is likely to ignite further criticism.
