Hunter Biden Pleads Not Guilty to Tax Crimes in Federal Court
In a stunning turn of events, Hunter Biden pleaded not guilty to alleged tax crimes in federal court on Wednesday. This comes after a plea deal his lawyers had reached with prosecutors hit a roadblock.
The proposed deal involved Hunter admitting guilt to two misdemeanor tax counts for willful failure to pay federal income tax. In exchange, he would enter a diversion program instead of pleading guilty to a felony gun charge.
However, U.S. District Judge Maryellen Noreika, a Trump nominee, expressed her inability to accept the plea deal in its current form. “These agreements are not straightforward and they contain atypical provisions,” she stated. “I’m not in a position where I can decide to accept or reject a plea agreement, and I need to defer it.”
The deal faced complications when Noreika questioned federal prosecutor Leo Wise about an ongoing criminal investigation into Hunter. Wise confirmed the existence of such an investigation but refrained from providing further details.
When asked if the ongoing investigation could potentially lead to charges related to the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA), Wise responded affirmatively. This revelation led defense attorney Chris Clark to declare the plea agreement null and void, believing it had closed the door on any additional charges.
