Mayorkas denies open border despite record illegal crossings under Biden.

Homeland ⁤Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas Denies Border is Open

In a recent appearance before the House Judiciary Committee, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas defended the Biden administration’s ⁤policies regarding the surge of illegal crossings at the border.⁣ Despite the record numbers of illegal immigrants entering the U.S. since President Joe Biden‌ took ‌office, Mayorkas insisted‍ that the border was “not” open.

During the hearing, Mayorkas faced tough questions from ‍Republicans ⁤about the ⁤state of the border.⁢ The estimated number ‌of illegal crossings has exceeded 5 million, raising concerns about ⁤the effectiveness of the administration’s approach.

“Our approach to managing the border‌ securely and humanely, even within our fundamentally broken immigration system, is working,” Mayorkas said. He highlighted a decrease in unlawful entries between ⁤ports of entry along the southwest border, ‍attributing it ⁤to the implementation of Title 42.

However, when asked directly⁤ by Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY) if the border was open, Mayorkas responded with a firm “It is not.” This statement was met with disagreement from House Republicans.

Lawmakers also questioned Mayorkas about the number of illegal immigrants released into the U.S. ⁤and whether there would be a⁣ limit on such releases. Rep. Tom McClintock (R-CA) pointed out that the number of releases already exceeded 2.1 million, equivalent to the population of Nebraska.

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) criticized what he called the “Mayorkas doctrine,” highlighting the significant drop in deportations under the Biden administration. According ⁣to Gaetz, individuals who enter ⁤the country and do not commit specific aggravated felonies are allowed to ⁤stay indefinitely.

Data from U.S. Customs and Border Protection reveals that ⁣there have been 1,789,605 southwest land border encounters in the fiscal ⁤year 2023. These numbers paint‍ a different picture than the one Secretary Mayorkas attempted to portray during the hearing.

“I ⁢know that today⁢ Secretary Mayorkas is going to try to paint a rosy picture of ‍this disastrous mismanagement of our border,” said House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan (R-OH). ‌”But the numbers don’t lie.”
