Judge orders Hunter Biden to find employment and steer clear of drugs.
U.S. District Judge Sets Requirements for Hunter Biden to Avoid Jail Time
In a recent court hearing, U.S. District Judge Maryellen Noreika outlined several conditions that first son Hunter Biden must meet in order to avoid jail time while an ongoing investigation surrounds him.
Requirements for Hunter Biden:
- Actively seek employment
- Avoid alcohol and drugs
- Refrain from purchasing or possessing firearms
- Submit to random drug tests
These conditions were detailed in court documents, taking into account Biden’s history of drug addiction and allegations of possessing a firearm while under the influence.
Plea Deal Collapses as Judge Throws Unexpected ‘Curveball’
If Hunter Biden complies with the terms of his release, the gun charge against him will be dropped. However, failure to adhere to these conditions could result in a felony gun charge carrying a sentence of up to 10 years, as stated in the documents.
The defense team initially anticipated Biden pleading guilty to two tax-related charges in exchange for dropping the felony gun charge. However, a dramatic turn of events unfolded during the federal court proceedings in Wilmington, Delaware.
After more than three hours, Judge Noreika postponed her ruling on the agreement, requesting additional briefings from both the government and the defendant’s counsel.
The agreement began to unravel when a lawyer from the Justice Department revealed that the investigation into Hunter Biden was still ongoing, leaving the possibility of additional charges, such as failure to register as a foreign agent under the Foreign Agents Registration Act.
Upon learning of the ongoing investigation, Biden’s defense lawyers argued that the plea agreement was now “null and void.” Consequently, Biden pleaded “not guilty” to all charges.
Republicans applauded Judge Noreika’s rejection of what they deemed a “sweetheart deal” for Biden, particularly in comparison to the multiple indictments faced by former President Donald Trump.
“District Judge Noreika made the right decision by refusing to rubberstamp Hunter Biden’s sweetheart plea deal,” stated House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) in an interview with Fox News. “But let’s be clear: Hunter’s sweetheart plea deal belongs in the trash.”
The court is scheduled to reconvene in 30 days to establish a new agreement and reevaluate the case.
