Mike Johnson advocates for a federal ban on child transgender surgeries to prevent significant harm.

Rep. Mike Johnson Calls for⁤ Nationwide Ban on Gender ‌Transition Surgeries for Minors

During a House Judiciary subcommittee hearing on the “Dangers⁤ and Due Process Violations⁣ of ‘Gender-Affirming Care’ for Children,” Rep. Mike Johnson‌ (R-LA) made a passionate plea for a nationwide ban on gender transition surgeries for minors. He condemned ⁢the practice ⁣as “barbaric … mutilation of children” and emphasized the need to protect children from abuse and physical harm.

Protecting⁢ Children from Abuse and Physical Harm

Johnson, the subcommittee⁣ chairman, firmly ⁣stated that even parents ⁢have no right to⁤ sexually ⁤transition⁤ young children. He highlighted the importance of⁣ safeguarding children⁢ and preventing them from ⁤making life-altering decisions at a young age. Johnson drew‍ parallels to existing⁤ safety laws, such as wearing seat belts and minimum ages for driving, drinking alcohol,‌ and smoking, which ‍are in place to protect the ‌public.

Questioning the Medical Establishment’s Support

Johnson also challenged the‍ overwhelming support for⁤ child sex change‍ procedures within the ⁣American medical establishment. He ⁤presented evidence‍ that doctors are performing these interventions⁣ with limited knowledge about⁤ the long-term outcomes ⁢for children. Rep. Harriet Hageman (R-WY)‍ joined him in comparing gender transitions to other harmful medical ⁢crazes, describing them⁢ as a “sexual⁣ lobotomy.”

Johnson⁤ firmly‍ stated that so-called gender-affirming care ⁢is anything⁣ but affirming and caring. He⁤ criticized the decision of adults to permanently‌ alter the bodies⁢ of children⁤ who ⁤lack the capacity‍ to make such‍ life-altering choices on their own.

Unspeakable Harms on Helpless Children

Johnson expressed concern about the unspeakable harms inflicted‌ on helpless children in the name ‍of affirming the fluidity of gender. He highlighted the coercive influence of⁣ social pressures and academia on impressionable children, while also pointing out ‍attempts by doctors to exclude parents‍ from the decision-making process. He referenced⁤ a case from Children’s Hospital New Orleans, where doctors disregarded parental consent and laughed ⁣in⁤ the‌ face ⁤of‌ a young girl’s parents who tried to intervene.

Democrats Condemn the Hearing

Democrats on the subcommittee⁤ strongly criticized the hearing itself. Judiciary Committee ranking⁤ member Jerry Nadler (D-NY) called⁣ it an “all-time low ‍for the Republican majority.” Subcommittee ranking⁢ member Mary ⁣Gay Scanlon ‌(D-PA) argued⁢ that Congress should ⁢not ‌interfere ⁢in parents’ freedom to‌ make⁢ decisions about appropriate medical ⁢care for their children. She dismissed the idea ⁣that politicians are more qualified than major medical organizations to ⁢judge the value⁤ or necessity of‍ gender-affirming care.

Scanlon⁢ emphasized that gender transitions have positively changed children’s lives and even ⁢saved ‌some. She cited the endorsement of‍ these medical interventions by the American medical establishment, stating⁤ that their safety and effectiveness‌ are not up for debate. She accused the ⁣hearing of being a fear-mongering tactic to mobilize conservative voters ⁣and promote right-wing talking⁤ points.

A Detransitioner’s Testimony

Nineteen-year-old detransitioner Chloe Cole testified ⁣before ‌the subcommittee, sharing her personal experience. She described the coercion she faced from doctors, ‌which led her to start a transition process at the age of 12. Cole referred to herself as a victim of a major medical scandal in the United⁣ States, where families are deceived and⁤ coerced based on ideological motivations.

Cole revealed that doctors used fear‌ tactics on her parents,‍ asking them if they would rather have a dead⁤ daughter or a living transgender son. Despite not being⁢ suicidal before the transition, Cole admitted ⁤that she became suicidal after ‍undergoing surgery. She expressed regret ⁣over irreversible changes to her‍ body, such ⁤as a deeper voice, a masculinized bone structure, and the loss of her breasts.

She concluded her⁢ testimony by urging lawmakers to recognize that ⁢puberty is a natural⁣ part⁣ of‍ growing up and should not ⁢be treated as‍ a disease. She pleaded for an end to the victimization of children ‌through this barbaric pseudoscience.
