Mike Johnson advocates for a federal ban on child transgender surgeries to prevent significant harm.
Rep. Mike Johnson Calls for Nationwide Ban on Gender Transition Surgeries for Minors
During a House Judiciary subcommittee hearing on the “Dangers and Due Process Violations of ‘Gender-Affirming Care’ for Children,” Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA) made a passionate plea for a nationwide ban on gender transition surgeries for minors. He condemned the practice as “barbaric … mutilation of children” and emphasized the need to protect children from abuse and physical harm.
Protecting Children from Abuse and Physical Harm
Johnson, the subcommittee chairman, firmly stated that even parents have no right to sexually transition young children. He highlighted the importance of safeguarding children and preventing them from making life-altering decisions at a young age. Johnson drew parallels to existing safety laws, such as wearing seat belts and minimum ages for driving, drinking alcohol, and smoking, which are in place to protect the public.
Questioning the Medical Establishment’s Support
Johnson also challenged the overwhelming support for child sex change procedures within the American medical establishment. He presented evidence that doctors are performing these interventions with limited knowledge about the long-term outcomes for children. Rep. Harriet Hageman (R-WY) joined him in comparing gender transitions to other harmful medical crazes, describing them as a “sexual lobotomy.”
Johnson firmly stated that so-called gender-affirming care is anything but affirming and caring. He criticized the decision of adults to permanently alter the bodies of children who lack the capacity to make such life-altering choices on their own.
Unspeakable Harms on Helpless Children
Johnson expressed concern about the unspeakable harms inflicted on helpless children in the name of affirming the fluidity of gender. He highlighted the coercive influence of social pressures and academia on impressionable children, while also pointing out attempts by doctors to exclude parents from the decision-making process. He referenced a case from Children’s Hospital New Orleans, where doctors disregarded parental consent and laughed in the face of a young girl’s parents who tried to intervene.
Democrats Condemn the Hearing
Democrats on the subcommittee strongly criticized the hearing itself. Judiciary Committee ranking member Jerry Nadler (D-NY) called it an “all-time low for the Republican majority.” Subcommittee ranking member Mary Gay Scanlon (D-PA) argued that Congress should not interfere in parents’ freedom to make decisions about appropriate medical care for their children. She dismissed the idea that politicians are more qualified than major medical organizations to judge the value or necessity of gender-affirming care.
Scanlon emphasized that gender transitions have positively changed children’s lives and even saved some. She cited the endorsement of these medical interventions by the American medical establishment, stating that their safety and effectiveness are not up for debate. She accused the hearing of being a fear-mongering tactic to mobilize conservative voters and promote right-wing talking points.
A Detransitioner’s Testimony
Nineteen-year-old detransitioner Chloe Cole testified before the subcommittee, sharing her personal experience. She described the coercion she faced from doctors, which led her to start a transition process at the age of 12. Cole referred to herself as a victim of a major medical scandal in the United States, where families are deceived and coerced based on ideological motivations.
Cole revealed that doctors used fear tactics on her parents, asking them if they would rather have a dead daughter or a living transgender son. Despite not being suicidal before the transition, Cole admitted that she became suicidal after undergoing surgery. She expressed regret over irreversible changes to her body, such as a deeper voice, a masculinized bone structure, and the loss of her breasts.
She concluded her testimony by urging lawmakers to recognize that puberty is a natural part of growing up and should not be treated as a disease. She pleaded for an end to the victimization of children through this barbaric pseudoscience.
