Trump indictment watch paused as Jack Smith grand jury concludes without charges on Thursday.
Former President Donald Trump Avoids Indictment, Investigation Continues
Exciting news from the federal courthouse in Washington, D.C.! Former President Donald Trump has narrowly escaped indictment, at least for today. According to reports, an official at the courthouse has confirmed that no indictments have been returned and none are expected for the remainder of the day.
However, this doesn’t mean that Trump is completely in the clear. On July 18, he took to his new social media platform, Truth Social, to reveal that he is the target of an investigation into the infamous January 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol and alleged attempts to undermine the 2020 election.
Grand Jury Deliberations and Special Counsel Investigation
Today, a federal grand jury convened at the courthouse, fueling speculation that charges might be imminent for the former president. This grand jury is part of special counsel Jack Smith’s investigation, which aims to uncover any efforts to subvert the 2020 election and impede the peaceful transfer of power during the Capitol riot.
Trump, however, remains defiant. In a post on Truth Social just after 1 p.m. EDT, he claimed that his attorneys had a “productive meeting” with Justice Department prosecutors earlier in the day. He downplayed the reports of an impending indictment, stating that no indication of such notice was given during the meeting. Trump also emphasized that he believes he did nothing wrong, with his attorneys providing a detailed explanation to support his innocence.
Trump’s spokesman, Steven Cheung, dismissed NBC News’s report that the former president’s lawyers were informed about the expected indictment, labeling it as “incorrect.”
Past Indictments and Ongoing Legal Battles
It’s worth noting that this isn’t the first time Trump has faced legal troubles. Special counsel Jack Smith has already indicted him in Florida for allegedly mishandling classified documents after leaving the Oval Office in 2021. Additionally, Trump was indicted in New York earlier this year in a case related to a $130,000 payment made to porn star Stormy Daniels during the final days of the 2016 presidential campaign. Trump has pleaded not guilty in both cases.
As the investigation continues, the Washington Examiner reached out to the clerk’s office for the federal district court for further information.
