90-Year-Old Dianne Feinstein Needed to Be Instructed by⁣ Staffer, Other Dem How to Vote on Bill

During ⁢a committee hearing on Thursday, Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California found herself in need of guidance on how to cast her ⁢vote on a bill. The incident‍ occurred while the members of the Senate Appropriations Committee were discussing the 2024 ‌Defense Appropriations Act.

Feinstein, who is 90 years old, hesitated before speaking, ⁤prompting her fellow Democrat, Sen. Patty Murray ⁢of Washington, to lean over⁣ and⁣ instruct her to say‌ “aye.”

Instead of a simple “aye,” Feinstein⁤ began giving a speech about the ⁢bill’s provisions. It was only after a staffer ‍whispered‍ to her that she finally said “aye,” eliciting laughter from those present.

Earlier ⁣this year, Feinstein was hospitalized with shingles and returned to work in May after a three-month hiatus. Upon her‍ return, she was helped into ⁢a wheelchair and was heard asking, “Where am I going?” She also mentioned having something in⁣ her eye.

In ⁣a statement regarding her return to the Senate, Feinstein acknowledged that she is still experiencing side effects from the shingles virus and has been advised by her doctors to work a lighter ⁣schedule. Despite these challenges, she remains hopeful that her condition will improve as she continues to recover.

As the oldest member of Congress, Feinstein has served for over 30 years. She has announced her intention ⁣to retire at the end of her current term in 2024.

Should Feinstein step down?
