Harvard leadership expert criticizes Musk: ‘He lacks social media understanding’
A Harvard Expert Criticizes Elon Musk’s Takeover of X
A Harvard expert in leadership has voiced his criticism of Elon Musk’s takeover of X, formerly known as Twitter. Bill George, an executive fellow at Harvard Business School, recently discussed the “big mistake” he believes Musk made in an interview with CNBC. With over two decades of studying leadership, George’s expertise lends weight to his critique.
“I don’t think he understands social media.”
“If you had to write a case study on an example of a really poor takeover of an organization, Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter would fit that perfectly well,” George told the outlet.
Musk’s rebranding of the platform is a significant aspect of George’s criticism. From changing its name to incorporating the letter “X” in the logo, Musk’s influence is evident. The letter “X” is a prominent feature in many of Musk’s other successful ventures, such as the Tesla Model X electric sedan and his space exploration company, SpaceX. Even his beginnings with Paypal started with the website X.com.
Under Musk’s leadership, advertising on the platform has declined. In an effort to cut costs, Musk laid off a significant number of employees and began charging for verified accounts on X. Linda Yaccarino, the former head of advertising at NBCUniversal, was hired to replace Musk as CEO.
Despite Musk’s commitment to allowing free speech on the platform, he also implemented the Community Notes feature. This feature allows approved contributors to fact-check tweets and provide additional context. Musk’s platform X has seen a surge in users, reaching a new monthly high of over 541,000,000.
Musk’s involvement in politics is also noteworthy. He recently hosted Vivek Ramaswamy, the third presidential candidate for 2024, in a Spaces conversation. Spaces enable livestream interviews with multiple users at once. Musk’s influence on X continues to shape its trajectory.
While Musk’s takeover of X has garnered attention, it has also faced criticism from experts like Bill George. Only time will tell how Musk’s leadership will impact the platform in the long run.
