Colombian president’s son arrested for money laundering.
Colombian President’s Son Arrested for Money Laundering
Colombian police made a significant arrest on Saturday, apprehending Nicolás Petro, the son of President Gustavo Petro. The arrest came after Petro’s ex-wife accused him of engaging in money laundering activities. According to her allegations, Petro received funds from a convicted individual to support his father’s successful presidential campaign last year. The ex-wife, Vasquez, claimed to have witnessed a $150,000 donation from a politician involved in drug trafficking.
President Petro’s Response
In a heartfelt message shared on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, President Petro expressed his personal anguish over the situation. He stated, “As an individual and father, it pains me to see so much self-destruction and one of my sons going to jail.” However, he assured the public that as the president, he has ensured that the chief prosecutor’s office will have all the necessary resources to proceed with the investigation in accordance with the law.
Denial and Allegations
Petro has vehemently denied the accusations made by his former wife. Interestingly, she herself was also taken into police custody. She further claimed that her father-in-law, President Petro, was unaware of his son’s illicit activities, despite alleged promises of campaign support to donors.
Anti-Corruption Campaigner
President Petro campaigned on a strong anti-corruption platform. As the country’s first leftist president and a former M-19 guerrilla fighter, he represented the Historic Pact for Colombia, a coalition comprising the Colombian Communist Party and other far-left political parties.
President Petro’s Stance
Despite his son’s involvement in the campaign, President Petro made it clear in his X post that he would not interfere with the ongoing investigation. Instead, he expressed hope that this ordeal would serve as an opportunity for his son to reflect on his mistakes and develop his character.
Colombia’s Relationship with the U.S.
It is worth noting that under the previous presidency, President Joe Biden designated Colombia as a non-NATO ally to the United States.
