Former Business Partner of Hunter Biden Fights to Avoid Jail Time Ahead of Congressional Testimony

Devon Archer, the former business ‍partner of ​Hunter Biden, is currently battling ‍to stay out of jail⁣ as he prepares to​ testify before a Congressional committee‌ on Monday.⁤ This comes as part of the GOP’s ongoing investigation ‍into the actions of the first son.

While Archer’s ​potential jail time is unrelated to ⁤his upcoming ​testimony, it holds significant weight in the investigation. Republicans have highlighted Archer’s testimony as ⁢a crucial turning point in the ⁣examination of the Justice Department’s‌ interference with the Hunter Biden investigation.

Archer’s Legal Troubles

In July 2018, Archer was convicted on⁢ two felony‍ charges related to a conspiracy⁤ to defraud a Native⁢ American‍ tribe. Despite being sentenced in 2022, he⁢ has ​managed to avoid prison ‌time through a series of ⁢appeals filed by his defense.

The United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New⁣ York ⁢recently sent a letter to trial judge Ronnie Abrams, requesting a date for Archer to report to prison. Assistant U.S. attorney Negar ⁤Tekeei informed Abrams that they had ‌asked Archer’s attorney, Matthew Schwartz, to ⁤recommend a reporting date.​ However, Schwartz rejected the request, ⁣stating‌ that it was premature given the defense’s plans for further appeals. Schwartz intends to provide an⁣ official response to the demands by Wednesday.

Archer is set to testify on Capitol Hill⁤ on Monday, and despite the ongoing legal battle, he plans to​ move forward with his scheduled testimony. The court is not expected to make a decision before his appearance.

Republican Lawmakers‌ React

The revelation of the DOJ’s request for Archer to ‌set a prison ​reporting date has‌ sparked a reaction ⁤from Republican lawmakers. Representatives Matt Gaetz (R-FL) and Mike Johnson (R-LA) are calling‍ for immediate emergency‍ hearings on the matter.

Gaetz accused the DOJ of actively obstructing a congressional investigation and stated that if Archer fails to appear on Monday, he will push​ for daily ‌hearings to hold the DOJ accountable. Johnson expressed his support, ​stating that he would join Gaetz back on Capitol‌ Hill.

Concerns have also been⁢ raised about the timing of the DOJ’s letter, which was issued on a weekend. Representative Comer described it as “odd” and questioned its proximity to Archer’s scheduled testimony before the House Oversight Committee. He believes that the American people deserve to hear the ‌truth about the Burisma situation.

Schwartz, ‌Archer’s attorney, dismissed any speculation ​of ‌a ⁣connection between the hearing and the DOJ’s letter. He stated that Archer will proceed with his planned testimony ⁤and honestly ⁤answer‌ the questions posed by the Congressional investigators.
