“Last night we said farewell to Paul Reubens, an iconic American actor, comedian, writer and producer whose beloved character Pee-wee Herman delighted generations of children and adults with his positivity, whimsy and belief in the importance of kindness,” a statement posted on his Facebook said.
In a heartfelt statement shared on social media, his family expressed their grief and admiration for Reubens’ talent and resilience. They revealed that he had been fighting cancer for years, showing incredible bravery and wit throughout his journey.
“Paul bravely and privately fought cancer for years with his trademark tenacity and wit. A gifted and prolific talent, he will forever live in the comedy pantheon and in our hearts as a treasured friend and man of remarkable character and generosity of spirit.”
Reubens began his career in the 1970s as part of the renowned Los Angeles-based improvisational comedy team, The Groundlings. It was during one of his improvisational performances that the character of Pee-wee Herman was born. Pee-wee made his television debut on the show The Dating Game and later became the star of his own show, Pee-wee’s Playhouse. Reubens also appeared in various films, including the cult classic Pee-wee’s Big Adventure and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
