Freshman Rep. John James Proposes Bill to Hold Congress Accountable During Government Shutdown
Freshman Representative John James (R-MI) is taking a stand against government shutdowns by introducing a groundbreaking bill. The “Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is” bill aims to prevent members of Congress from receiving their pay during a shutdown.
“I think it’s essential to really get folks in D.C. to refocus on the priorities, which is doing things that work for people back home,”
– John James
James, who narrowly won his seat in 2022 and currently represents Michigan’s 10th Congressional District, is determined to bring attention to the struggles faced by his constituents. With 25% of his district living below the poverty line, he believes it is unacceptable for politicians to receive their salaries while causing harm to the American people.
“And now you have politicians who are making over $175,000 a year to shut down the government and hurt people back home. That’s not acceptable. There needs to be accountability, there needs to be transparency. We need to have action out of our politicians in D.C.”
– John James
While the federal funding deadline is still a few weeks away, Congress is currently in its August recess. This break has raised concerns about whether necessary policy changes and spending bills will be passed in time to fund government agencies.
James hopes that his bill will serve as a wake-up call to his colleagues, urging them to avoid a shutdown and prioritize the needs of the American people.
“I’m confident that we’re going to come together, we’re going to unify, and we’re gonna pass the most conservative legislation that can be signed into law,”
– John James
James is committed to working with his Republican colleagues and believes that it is crucial to keep essential services running for the American people who rely on their elected officials to do their job.
