Dozens of Illegal Immigrants Sleeping Outside NYC Hotel as Migrant Crisis⁢ Deepens

Amidst the ‍ongoing ⁣surge of migrants from the southern border, ‌New York City is grappling with a concerning⁣ situation. Outside the Roosevelt Hotel in‌ Manhattan, ‍which has been repurposed as a migrant shelter, dozens of illegal immigrants were spotted sleeping across three city blocks.

“I came to New York City because I thought there would be help,” shared Abderahim Mahamat Saleh, a⁤ migrant from​ the Central African Republic. However, the reality has⁤ been ‌far from what he expected. “I wish I didn’t⁣ come to New York,” he lamented.

Some migrants resorted to sleeping in vans along the street, but even those quickly reached capacity. The hotel itself ⁣has been full all weekend, leading to instances of pushing and shoving as migrants desperately try to gain entry.

Mohamed Mokhtar, another migrant, expressed his frustration, saying, “They tell us there​ is⁤ no room. There is ‍going to be like ⁤ [sic],​ they’re all full. We have to wait. Maybe⁢ two weeks, maybe ‌two days, who ‍knows? ⁣They give us‍ the ticket. They said they’re going to call us and they didn’t.”

Mayor’s Office Warns of More Sidewalk Sleepers

In ​a statement, the office of Democratic mayor Eric Adams acknowledged that New Yorkers‍ should expect to witness more migrants sleeping on sidewalks. As hundreds of asylum seekers continue to arrive daily, the city’s capacity to accommodate them is stretched thin.

New York City has been ​grappling with the management of this migrant influx.‍ In fact, Adams’s‍ administration has resorted to distributing flyers at the southern border, urging migrants to “consider another city.”

The flyer‌ outlines the high costs of housing and food that migrants would have to bear if they choose to settle in New York City.

“Please consider another city‍ as you make⁣ your decision about where to ‌settle⁤ in the U.S.,” the flyer advises in‌ both English and Spanish.

These challenges faced by the city come in stark contrast to Adams’s campaign promise of maintaining New York as a sanctuary‍ city. ⁢In January, he even stated that the city had “no room” for migrants.
