Lawyer warns of legal action against non-profit for targeting ‘hate speech’ on platform.
X Threatens Legal Action Against Non-Profit Over Hate Speech Claims
X, the social-media giant formerly known as Twitter, has recently issued a legal warning to a non-profit organization. The organization, called the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH), has been accused by X of spreading false claims that hate speech has increased on the platform since Elon Musk acquired the company last year.
In a letter dated July 20, X attorney Alex Spiro addressed the CCDH, stating that their content was intended to harm Musk’s business by driving advertisers away from the platform with incendiary claims. Spiro further accused the CCDH of making baseless claims that were calculated to harm Twitter and its digital advertising business.
The letter specifically referenced a report published by the CCDH, which claimed that X had failed to take action on 99% of “toxic” tweets involving racist, homophobic, neo-Nazi, antisemitic, or conspiracy content posted by Twitter Blue subscribers. Spiro also alleged that the CCDH received funds from other social media platforms, including TikTok and Facebook.
X Corp is now considering whether the CCDH may be liable under the Lanham Act, which covers trademark law. The letter from X’s attorney warned that the company would use all legal tools at its disposal to prevent false or misleading claims from harming its users, platform, or business.
Non-Profit CEO Responds to X’s Actions
Imran Ahmed, CEO of the CCDH, issued a statement in response to Musk’s actions, calling them a brazen attempt to silence honest criticism and independent research. Ahmed stated that the letter marked an unprecedented escalation between X and independent researchers, and he warned that if Musk succeeded in silencing them, other researchers would be targeted next.
Attorney Roberta Kaplan, representing the CCDH, responded to Spiro’s letter by cautioning X about the risks of bringing frivolous claims to intimidate critics and stifle legitimate commentary on matters of public interest.
Musk himself took to his X account to respond to the news, suggesting that the CCDH should save their words for the jury. In another post, he expressed his desire to uncover the true motives behind the organization.

According to X News Daily, the CCDH allegedly had some influence on content moderation on the platform before Musk purchased Twitter. Just two days before Spiro sent the letter, Musk himself questioned the funding of the CCDH, accusing them of spreading disinformation and pushing censorship while claiming the opposite.
