McConaughey aims to reframe ‘gun control’ for increased measures.
Matthew McConaughey Advocates for “Gun Responsibility” Instead of “Gun Control”
During a recent interview, actor Matthew McConaughey shared his belief that gun control activists should reframe their message as “gun responsibility” in order to gain support from Second Amendment advocates.
McConaughey, who has been vocal about advocating for change following the Uvalde, Texas shooting, expressed his views during an interview on ABC News’ “This Week” with Jonathan Karl. He also announced the launch of the Green Lights Grant Initiative, a program he founded with his wife Camilla to help schools access federal grant money for safety and security.
Despite the passage of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act (BSCA) last year, which allocated funding for mental health services and school security in response to the Uvalde shooting, McConaughey revealed that the money has not yet reached the schools. He expressed frustration that none of the 12 schools in the area that applied for the funding have received it, calling it a “zero percent success rate.”
McConaughey emphasized the need to simplify the process and connect school districts to the billions of dollars available for making schools safer. He believes that the lack of progress in implementing gun control measures after tragedies is due to the way the debate is framed.
According to McConaughey, changing the word “control” to “responsibility” was a key factor in getting the attention of Second Amendment defenders. He explained that “control” sounds like a mandate, while “responsibility” is a value that resonates with many, including those on the far-right or Republicans who take pride in being responsible.
In a 2018 rally for the anti-gun March For Our Lives group in Austin, Texas, McConaughey previously called on law-abiding gun owners to “take one for the team” and give up certain gun rights, including the ownership of semi-automatic long guns and high-capacity magazines.
