White House aims to improve Kamala Harris’s image amid scrutiny over her border czar role.
Vice President Kamala Harris Struggles to Make Progress on Border Crisis
Vice President Kamala Harris, who has faced criticism for her role as border czar, is still working to achieve success in addressing the ongoing border crisis. Despite being tasked by President Joe Biden to tackle the root causes of migration from Central American countries, Harris has been targeted by Republican lawmakers and questioned about her ability to lead.
While President Biden takes a vacation in Delaware, Harris is taking charge and increasing her public appearances. Her work has largely taken place behind closed doors, as she develops diplomatic relations with the governments of El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras, known as the Northern Triangle countries.
Challenges and Criticism
However, critics argue that Harris has not been effective in her role and that any progress made is due to the efforts of career professionals within the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of State, rather than political appointees. House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Mark Green blames the Biden administration’s policies for the surge in border crossings and accuses Harris of failing to address the root causes.
The number of people encountered at the southern border from countries other than Mexico and the Northern Triangle has significantly increased, with over 6 million people from other continents attempting to enter the United States in 2021. In response, Biden appointed Harris to lead efforts in addressing the root causes of migration.
Efforts to Address Root Causes
Harris’s strategy focuses on improving business conditions, combating corruption, promoting human rights, countering gangs and cartels, and addressing domestic violence. Her team has negotiated agreements with countries like Guatemala, Colombia, Costa Rica, and Panama to establish safe mobility offices where immigrants can seek admission to the U.S. legally.
Private-sector corporations have also invested billions of dollars in Central America to create jobs and boost the economy. Harris has announced additional investments from companies like Gap, Visa, and AgroAmerica.
Despite these efforts, experts point out that the root causes of migration, such as government instability and corruption, are deeply ingrained and challenging to address. While the United States can demand accountability, it cannot single-handedly solve these issues.
As the border crisis continues, Harris’s record and effectiveness in addressing the situation remain under scrutiny. Neither Harris’s office nor the Department of Homeland Security has commented on her border record.
