Elon Musk removes giant ‘X’ from HQ amid permit dispute with San Francisco.
San Francisco authorities are currently engaged in a dispute with tech mogul Elon Musk over the renovation of his social media company, X’s, headquarters without proper permits.
The headquarters, located in San Francisco, recently had a massive, flashing “X” logo installed on its rooftop. However, the San Francisco Department of Building Inspection launched an investigation into the unpermitted installation after receiving numerous complaints about the sign. As a result, the logo was removed on Monday.

Musk, who recently rebranded the social media site formerly known as Twitter into X, had plans to expand the platform to include banking, a virtual marketplace, and other features. The renovation of the headquarters began with the removal of the old Twitter logo and lettering from the building’s exterior.
However, city officials halted the renovation when they discovered that the changes were being made without proper permits. They stated that approval was necessary to ensure the changes were in line with the building’s historic nature.
The city officials issued a notice of violation against X’s new signage, the illuminated X logo on the rooftop, citing safety concerns. Although the removal of the sign on Monday was also unpermitted, the city allowed it to be taken down due to safety reasons, with the proper permits to be obtained later.
“Over the weekend, the Department of Building Inspection and City Planning received 24 complaints about the unpermitted structure, including concerns about its structural safety and illumination. This morning, building inspectors observed the structure being dismantled. A building permit is required to remove the structure but, due to safety concerns, the permit can be secured after the structure is taken down,” explained department spokesman Patrick Hannan in an email to CNN.
Hannan added, “The property owner will be assessed fees for the unpermitted installation of the illuminated structure. The fees will be for building permits for the installation and removal of the structure, and to cover the cost of the Department of Building Inspection and the Planning Department’s investigation.”
Musk’s rebranding of the well-known social media platform into X aims to transform it into the “everything app.” In a statement on the site, CEO Linda Yaccarino expressed, “X is the future state of unlimited interactivity – centered in audio, video, messaging, payments/banking – creating a global marketplace for ideas, goods, services, and opportunities.”
