The design of the shoe showcases a pink woman with scars where her breasts would be, representing the double mastectomy that many trans-identifying individuals undergo to appear more masculine. Jess Vosseteig, the artist behind the design, is a “queer illustrator” whose work focuses on inclusivity, empowerment, and creating conversations surrounding feminism and the queer community.
Vosseteig explained her inspiration for the design, stating, “The inspiration for my design came from representing queer joy! I wanted to include two stylized people that were part of the queer community. I knew I wanted to incorporate lots of color with rainbows, clouds, and sparkles! I wrote ‘Queer Joy’ on the back of them to send the message that queer joy will always exist.”
The shoe is not available for sale from Dr. Martens, but the company has advertised a giveaway for the shoes on its U.S. Instagram account. Followers have a chance to receive the shoes by following both Dr. Martens and Vosseteig, liking the post, and tagging a friend by July 31.
