Pornhub cut off states due to new age verification rules.
The Battle Over Age Verification: Pornhub Bars Access from Several States
The popular pornography website, Pornhub, has taken a bold stance against laws requiring age verification to access its content. In a move to protect user privacy, the adult content site has preemptively barred access from several states.
Arkansas: The Latest State to Face the Ban
Arkansas became the most recent state to have its users banned by Pornhub. The company implemented the ban just days before the state was set to enforce age verification rules. In a statement, Pornhub expressed concerns about the effectiveness of requiring users to provide their ID cards, stating that it puts children and privacy at risk.
The state legislature passed the Protection of Minors from Distribution of Harmful Materials Act in April, with plans to implement it this month.
Virginia, Mississippi, and Utah: Joining the Ban
Utah, Mississippi, and Virginia all passed legislation requiring age verification for accessing pornographic sites. In response, Pornhub redirected users from these states to a separate page featuring a video by adult film performer Cherie DeVille. DeVille echoed Pornhub’s concerns about user privacy and the potential risks to children.
Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin remains committed to protecting children from harmful internet content, according to a spokeswoman.
Louisiana: A Pioneer in Age Restrictions
Louisiana was one of the first states to implement age restrictions for online content. The state required users to present copies of their government-issued IDs to a state-run database in order to access pornography websites. Republican state Representative Laurie Schlegel, the bill’s sponsor, argued that pornography was negatively impacting children and that the industry needed to be held accountable.
Interestingly, Pornhub did not choose to restrict its website in Louisiana.
Other States in the Mix
Several other states have attempted to follow in Louisiana’s footsteps, with varying degrees of success. Texas and Montana have passed legislation but have not yet implemented it. Lawmakers in Florida, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, South Dakota, and West Virginia introduced similar bills but failed to get them passed before the end of the legislative session. California also had a bill introduced, but its initial hearing was canceled.
As the battle over age verification continues, privacy concerns and the protection of children remain at the forefront of the debate.
