Obama-donating judge in Jan. 6 case defends BLM protesters post-riots; Donald Trump indicted.
The Judge Defending Rioters and the Case Against Donald Trump
In the highly anticipated case involving former President Donald Trump and his alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 election, Judge Tanya Chutkan of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia has emerged as a controversial figure. Notably, she has previously defended rioters from protests in the summer of 2020, drawing a distinction between their actions and the rioters at the Capitol building on January 6, 2021.
“People gathered all over the country last year to protest the violent murder by the police of an unarmed man. Some of those protesters became violent,” Chutkan said in a hearing in October 2021, per Politico. “But to compare the actions of people protesting, mostly peacefully, for civil rights, to those of a violent mob seeking to overthrow the lawfully elected government is a false equivalency and ignores a very real danger that the January 6 riot posed to the foundation of our democracy.”
The riots following George Floyd’s death in May 2020 resulted in numerous casualties, widespread curfews, and billions of dollars in property damage. In contrast, the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021, caused an estimated $2.73 million in damage and led to the death of one rioter and injuries to several others.
It is worth noting that Judge Chutkan, appointed by President Barack Obama, has gained a reputation for handing down lengthy sentences to defendants implicated in the Capitol riot. Additionally, records indicate that she has made political donations to Obama and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY).
The Indictment of Donald Trump
Following an investigation by special counsel Jack Smith, a grand jury in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia indicted Donald Trump on four counts: conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, obstruction of and attempt to obstruct an official proceeding, and conspiracy against rights.
Trump is scheduled to appear before Magistrate Judge Moxila A. Upadhyaya at a courthouse in Washington, D.C., on Thursday at 4 p.m.
