Accomplice of Disbarred Attorney Alex Murdaugh Sentenced to 7 Years in Prison
Former Palmetto State Bank CEO Russell Laffitte, 51, has been sentenced to seven years in prison for his involvement in helping Alex Murdaugh steal money from clients. Laffitte, who was convicted of six charges of wire and bank fraud last November, will be the first of Murdaugh’s accomplices to face prison time.
Stealing Millions from Clients
Laffitte played a key role in assisting Murdaugh in embezzling nearly $2 million from clients’ legal settlements. In addition to the prison sentence, U.S. District Judge Richard Gergel has ordered Laffitte to pay over $3 million in restitution.
Manipulated by Murdaugh
Despite his conviction, Laffitte maintains his innocence, claiming that he was unaware of the illegal nature of his actions and that he was manipulated by Murdaugh.
Murdaugh’s Web of Crime
Murdaugh, who has been accused of a wide range of crimes including money laundering and drug offenses, was recently sentenced to two consecutive life sentences for the murder of his wife and youngest son. During the sentencing, Judge Clifton Newman condemned Murdaugh for his repeated lies, including his denial of being present at the crime scene. Cell phone evidence proved otherwise, and Murdaugh eventually admitted to lying while testifying in his own defense.
