Accomplice of Disbarred Attorney Alex Murdaugh Sentenced to 7 Years ⁤in Prison

Former Palmetto State Bank CEO Russell Laffitte,⁢ 51, has been sentenced to seven years‍ in prison ​for his involvement in helping Alex ⁢Murdaugh ​steal money from clients. Laffitte, who ⁢was ​convicted of six charges of wire and bank⁢ fraud last November, ⁢will be the ⁤first of Murdaugh’s ‍accomplices to face prison time.

Stealing Millions from Clients

Laffitte played⁢ a ‌key role in assisting Murdaugh in embezzling nearly $2 ‍million from ​clients’ legal settlements. In addition to ⁢the prison​ sentence, U.S.⁢ District Judge Richard Gergel has ordered Laffitte to pay over $3 million in restitution.

Despite his conviction, Laffitte maintains his innocence, claiming ‌that he was unaware of the illegal nature of his actions and that he was‌ manipulated by‌ Murdaugh.

Murdaugh’s Web of Crime

Murdaugh, who has been accused of a wide range of crimes including ⁢money⁢ laundering and drug offenses, was recently sentenced to‌ two consecutive life sentences for the murder ‍of his wife and⁢ youngest son. ⁤The trial revealed⁣ Murdaugh’s cunning manipulation and betrayal of trust, ​as⁣ testified by over 70 witnesses.

A Man of⁤ Lies

During the sentencing, Judge ⁢Clifton Newman ⁣condemned Murdaugh for his repeated lies, including his‍ denial ⁢of​ being‍ present at the crime ⁤scene. Cell phone evidence proved otherwise, and Murdaugh eventually ‌admitted to lying while testifying ⁢in ⁣his⁣ own defense.
