Colorado Children’s Hospital ends transgender surgeries.
Children’s Hospital Colorado Ends Transgender Surgeries for Adults
Children’s Hospital Colorado has made the decision to discontinue performing transgender surgeries on adults who identify as transgender.
The hospital clarifies that they never performed these surgeries on minors, which can include procedures such as double mastectomies, vaginoplasty, and penectomy. However, now these surgeries will no longer be available for individuals aged 18 and older.
Despite this change, Children’s Hospital Colorado will continue to provide controversial puberty blockers and hormone therapies to children, according to Rachael Fowler, a spokesperson for the hospital.
Fowler stated that this decision was not taken lightly, as the hospital has been facing an overwhelming number of referrals. She also mentioned that the hospital has faced backlash over the controversial treatments, which may have influenced their choice.
Protecting Safety Amid Threats
Speaking to The Denver Post, Fowler revealed that children’s hospitals nationwide have been directly threatened due to the gender-affirming care they provide. As a result, Children’s Hospital Colorado has taken measures to ensure the safety of their team members, patients, and families.
The Denver Post also reported that the hospital has removed several references to “gender-affirming care” from its website.
Controversy Surrounding Transgender Surgeries
While the state of Colorado has recognized transgender surgeries and treatments for minors as a “right,” approximately 20 states are actively working to restrict these procedures. These states argue that such interventions can cause irreparable harm and lack true consent.
One notable case is that of Soren Aldaco, a 21-year-old woman from Texas who no longer identifies as transgender. Aldaco is suing her doctors for over $1 million, claiming that the medical interventions she received as a teenager have left her permanently damaged.
Aldaco and her lawyer, Ron Miller, are seeking accountability and justice in her case. They hope to send a message to medical insurers, urging them to reconsider covering these practices. By doing so, they believe that practitioners will be less inclined to take the risk, ultimately leading to a decrease in such procedures.
In her lawsuit, filed in July, Aldaco alleges that medical professionals in Texas prioritized their ideology over her long-term mental and physical well-being, resulting in her “permanent disfigurement” and “profound psychological scarring.”
