Kamala Harris visits Kenosha as Biden seeks black support like in 2020.
Vice President Kamala Harris to Visit Kenosha County, Wisconsin
Vice President Kamala Harris is set to travel to Kenosha County, Wisconsin on Thursday, while President Joe Biden takes a vacation in Delaware. This visit comes as part of the administration’s efforts to expand broadband access to all communities across the nation. Harris will be joined by Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo to discuss these initiatives.
Addressing a Controversial Incident
It’s worth noting that this trip takes place nearly three years after the shooting of Jacob Blake, which resulted in widespread rioting. Harris had previously expressed her belief that the police officer involved should face criminal charges. She met with Blake’s family in Milwaukee and acknowledged the weight they carry.
While it remains unclear if Harris will address the Blake shooting and subsequent riots during her visit, it is important to recognize that this trip coincides with the administration’s efforts to regain support among black voters, a crucial component of Biden’s winning coalition in 2020.
Fulfilling Promises and Rebuilding Support
The Biden administration has emphasized its commitment to advancing communities of color, with initiatives like the “Internet for All” domestic broadband expansion plan. Wisconsin, where Harris will be visiting, is a critical state for Biden’s expected 2024 rematch against former President Donald Trump.
Although Biden still enjoys significant support among black voters, there has been a decrease since he took office. Polls indicate that some black respondents feel his agenda has had little impact on their community. As Harris fulfills her duties in Biden’s absence, she aims to improve her own approval ratings and reassure black voters that the administration has their best interests in mind.
A Busy Schedule
In addition to her visit to Kenosha, Harris will attend two campaign fundraisers in Milwaukee and deliver Jobs Day remarks at the White House. These appearances serve the dual purpose of rehabilitating Harris’s approval ratings and reaffirming the administration’s commitment to black voters.
During her recent remarks in Florida, Harris criticized Governor Ron DeSantis for his education reforms, particularly those related to teaching black history. She firmly stated that there were no redeeming qualities of slavery and declined DeSantis’s invitation to discuss the state’s new standards.
As the vice president takes on these responsibilities, President Biden is enjoying his August recess in Delaware, while the administration continues to work towards fulfilling its promises and rebuilding support among key voter groups.
