House Republicans launch investigation into alleged Chinese cyber espionage on US federal agencies.
House Republicans Launch Probe into Chinese Cyber-Espionage Campaigns
House Republicans have initiated an investigation into suspected Chinese cyber-espionage campaigns targeting the State Department and the Commerce Department. This comes after hackers gained unauthorized access to federal government communications, raising concerns about national security.
Investigation Led by House Oversight and Accountability Chair
The investigation is being led by House Oversight and Accountability Chair James Comer (R-KY), along with Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) and Rep. Glenn Growthman (R-WI). In two letters sent to Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, the lawmakers requested further information regarding the cyber breaches.
The lawmakers want a briefing on the compromise by August 9, as they believe that the recent discovery of the hacking indicates that China’s cyberattacks are becoming increasingly sophisticated. They are concerned that Chinese hackers may have the ability to access high-level computer networks and remain undetected for extended periods.
Lawmakers also requested a briefing from Raimondo in a nearly identical letter to the one sent to Blinken.
Growing Concerns Over Chinese Cyber Threats
News of the hacking, which federal officials first discovered in June, was made public in July. The Commerce Department took immediate action to respond to the compromise of Microsoft’s Office 365 system, and they continue to monitor their systems for any further activity.
In March, the White House released a framework emphasizing the need for cybersecurity. It highlighted China, along with North Korea, Russia, and Iran, as countries actively working to enhance their cyber capabilities. The framework described China as the most significant and persistent threat, with the intent and power to reshape the international order.
China’s pursuit of “digital authoritarianism” to shape the global Internet in its image is a growing concern.
