Rep. Chip Roy: A Silent Majority Prefers Gov. Ron DeSantis over Trump in 2024
Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) believes that a new silent majority is emerging within the Republican party. This growing share of Republicans and independents favors Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) over former President Donald Trump in the 2024 Republican presidential primary.
“My observation tells me there is a strong silent majority of people who think Gov. DeSantis would be a great direction for our country,”
In an interview with the Washington Examiner, Roy, who has endorsed DeSantis in the 2024 race, expressed that many individuals are hesitant to publicly support the Florida governor due to their fear of parting ways with Trump.
“A lot of them just don’t want to break from the former president. But when you talk to them privately, they say, ‘Oh man, I really really like Gov. DeSantis. I really think he’s in a good spot. I really think he might give us a better shot in the general [election]. And he can serve eight years — all these things. But I just don’t know about coming out against Trump,'” Roy said.
Roy emphasized that this sentiment is shared by citizens, activists, and members of Congress. He pointed to a viral exchange during DeSantis’s trip to South Carolina, where a hardcore Trump supporter expressed her admiration for the Florida governor.
Roy said, “That is exactly what I’m hearing across the country when I talk to people.”
According to Roy, people are recognizing DeSantis as a winner who is solid and conservative. He predicted that more individuals would become intrigued by DeSantis’s campaign.
If Trump were ineligible due to term limitations, Roy explained that DeSantis would be the clear front-runner, even among his current opponents who are currently taking shots at him. Roy emphasized the need for a candidate who can run for a second term, as one term is not enough to accomplish everything.
When asked about DeSantis’s ability to chip away at Trump’s significant lead in the polls, Roy acknowledged that it would take time. He highlighted the media advantage that Trump currently holds but noted that DeSantis is holding steady in the polls and gaining strong numbers in early primary and caucus states.
Roy stressed the importance of being on the ground, working hard, and earning support. He also mentioned a decrease in the number of people planning to vote for Trump and an increase in those planning to oppose him.
Regarding Trump’s legal troubles, Roy expressed the need for a fresh perspective and highlighted DeSantis’s track record of success. He believes that DeSantis is the best candidate to end the weaponization of the Department of Justice.
Overall, Rep. Chip Roy firmly believes that Gov. Ron DeSantis is the preferred choice for many Republicans and independents in the 2024 presidential primary.
