Katy Perry’s backup singer rejects solo pop career for God.
Former Katy Perry Backup Singer Turns Down Pop Career to Serve God
Former Katy Perry backup singer Tasha Layton had a life-changing decision to make after four years with the superstar. She had the opportunity to launch a solo pop career, but instead, she chose to dedicate her life to serving God.
The 40-year-old Christian music singer and worship leader first entered the music industry in 2010 when she auditioned for Season 9 of “American Idol.” Although she didn’t make it to Hollywood, her talent caught the attention of industry professionals, leading her to become a backup singer for Perry while continuing to lead worship at her church, as reported by Fox News.
“I look back at those days and have a new perspective on the weight that Katy was carrying and the pressure she faced,” Layton shared. “Waking up early for photo shoots and interviews, dealing with the paparazzi. Fame truly changes your brain.”

While Layton had nothing but praise for Perry as a “really compassionate person,” she revealed that other celebrities she encountered behind the scenes were not as professional.
“During one show, there were some other celebrities involved – I won’t mention their names,” Layton shared. “They were unprofessional. Katy, on the other hand, remained incredibly professional and made up for their shortcomings.”
Having experienced the culture and pressure of being on the road with Perry, Layton gained a firsthand understanding of how damaging fame can be to one’s soul. She missed singing songs that directly connected people to God.
“I’ve always led worship in church,” Layton continued. “When I look back on my life, I won’t care about building a career. I’ll care about how I helped people. The mainstream music industry and the type of music they wanted me to sing wouldn’t have been beneficial or connected people to the creator of the universe.”
When offered a lucrative mainstream deal to pursue pop music, Layton easily turned it down. Instead, she took time to focus on her mental health and ultimately decided to share with others how God has guided her life.
