Obama allegedly declined to denounce antisemitism and black nationalism, according to a recently resurfaced biography.
A Revealing Biography on Barack Obama
A resurfaced biography on Barack Obama has shed light on a controversial argument he had with his then-girlfriend, where he allegedly refused to condemn antisemitism and black nationalism.
Tablet Magazine’s David Samuels recently published a lengthy expose based on an interview with David Garrow, a renowned civil rights historian who authored a biography on Obama titled Rising Star. In this book, Garrow reveals an exchange between Obama and his girlfriend at the time, Sheila Miyoshi Jager, where Obama reportedly refused to condemn antisemitism and black nationalism.
The argument was sparked after the couple visited an exhibit about the trial of Adolf Eichmann, a Nazi responsible for the Holocaust. At the time, Chicago was embroiled in controversy surrounding accusations of Jewish doctors infecting black babies with AIDS. The incident occurred during a lecture series organized by Louis Farrakhan’s Nation of Islam.
“In Jager’s recollection, what set off the quarrel that precipitated the end of the couple’s relationship was Obama’s stubborn refusal, after seeing the exhibit, and in the swirl of this Cokely affair, to condemn Black racism,” Samuels wrote. “While acknowledging that Obama’s embrace of a Black identity had created some degree of distance between the couple, she insisted that what upset her that day was Obama’s inability to condemn Cokely’s comments.”
“It was not Obama’s Blackness that bothered her, but that he would not condemn antisemitism,” Samuels added.
In his memoir, Dreams from My Father, Obama portrayed the argument differently, emphasizing his embrace of a personal meaning for the Black experience. However, it is a documented fact that Obama has associated with notable antisemites like Farrakhan. A photo surfaced showing Obama and Farrakhan smiling together during a Congressional Black Caucus meeting, despite Farrakhan’s controversial views on Judaism and Hitler.
While Obama’s past associations have been downplayed by the media, it is important to examine his community organizing background. Conservative radio host Larry Elder pointed out that if the media had scrutinized Obama’s association with Rev. Jeremiah Wright, who made anti-Semitic remarks, it could have derailed his candidacy.
