California residents will receive direct payments of up to $500 in 12 days.
The Long Beach Pledge: Providing Support to Vulnerable Families
The city of Long Beach, California, is taking a proactive approach to help vulnerable families who have been economically impacted. Through a groundbreaking guaranteed income pilot program, funds will be provided to those in need. And the best part? Payments will be issued in just 12 days!
The Long Beach Recovery Act introduced the Long Beach Pledge, which opened applications last year. This initiative promises $500 a month for an entire year to 250 families residing in the city’s west-central 90813 ZIP code. According to the Fund for Guaranteed Income, payments will be sent out on the third Wednesday of each month.
The selection of this specific area was based on the highest need, considering poverty rates and the effects of the pandemic. Shockingly, approximately half of the residents in this ZIP code live below 150% of the poverty level, as reported by the Long Beach Pledge site.
Qualifications and Application Process
To qualify for this incredible opportunity, applicants must have fallen below 100% of the federal poverty line and have one income earner for their household. Applications for the city’s economic and public health initiatives program closed last month, with a staggering 2,700 applicants, according to the Long Beach Post.
Selected households will have the flexibility to choose their preferred method of receiving the monthly payments. Options include direct deposit, Venmo, PayPal, or a prepaid card.
A Collaborative Effort
The city has allocated $2 million to this program, partnering with the nonprofit organization Fund for Guaranteed Income. This collaboration has already proven successful, as the Fund for Guaranteed Income launched a similar guaranteed income program in Compton. In Compton, 800 families received payments ranging from $300 to $600.
By providing financial support to vulnerable families, the city of Long Beach is making a significant impact on the lives of its residents. This innovative approach to addressing economic challenges is commendable and sets an example for other communities to follow.
