Biden’s administration takes action to implement fresh oil lease prohibition.
Bureau of Land Management Proposes Ban on New Oil Leasing in Colorado
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has issued an exciting proposal that could have a significant impact on oil leasing in Colorado. The proposal, part of the Biden administration’s efforts to address environmental concerns, aims to settle litigation with environmentalist groups challenging the government’s land use policies.
If finalized, this proposal would result in a ban on new oil leasing on approximately 1.6 million acres of land in Colorado. Over the next two decades, it could lead to a decrease of 600 oil wells in the affected areas. Additionally, the BLM plans to designate nine zones of BLM-owned land as “areas of critical environmental concern,” covering over 100,000 acres in the state.
Colorado is a significant player in U.S. domestic crude oil production, accounting for 4 percent of the country’s output. Despite this, the BLM is also considering the cultural significance of certain sites to Native American tribes living in the region. Some tribes have expressed concerns about the impact on their revenues from mining and drilling.
This proposal follows the Biden administration’s recent decision to settle a legal dispute regarding offshore oil drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. As part of the settlement, the government will restrict oil and gas leasing in an area spanning approximately 11 million acres.
President Joe Biden campaigned on a promise to end drilling projects on federal lands, and this proposal aligns with that commitment. The BLM’s proposal is expected to be published in the Federal Register soon.
