DeSantis evades federal abortion ban following disagreement with anti-abortion group.
Gov. Ron DeSantis’s Stance on Abortion Ban Sparks Controversy
During a recent television interview, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) remained tight-lipped about his potential endorsement of a federal abortion ban. This has stirred up a heated debate among national anti-abortion groups, who have been urging Republican presidential candidates to support a nationwide ban on abortion.
Earlier this year, DeSantis signed a groundbreaking six-week abortion ban into law, surpassing the 15-week ban advocated by his fellow 2024 presidential contender, former Vice President Mike Pence, and others. However, when questioned about his willingness to sign a national abortion ban if elected president, DeSantis emphasized that he believes the issue should be decided by individual states.
DeSantis’s Commitment to Pro-Life Policies
When asked if he would veto a nationwide abortion ban, DeSantis assured NBC News’s Dasha Burns that he would be a pro-life president and support pro-life policies. He expressed his opposition to the Left’s desire to override pro-life protections, even up until the moment of birth, which he considers to be infanticide.
Furthermore, DeSantis made it clear that he would not support any penalties on women who choose to undergo an abortion.
This stance has drawn criticism from the national anti-abortion group Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America. The group’s president, Marjorie Dannenfelser, stated that a pro-life president has a duty to protect the lives of all Americans and should be the National Defender of Life. Dannenfelser deemed DeSantis’s dismissal of this duty as unacceptable to pro-life voters.
In a preview clip of the interview, Burns challenged DeSantis’s claim that Democrats support “infanticide,” leading to a brief exchange. Burns pointed out that only a small percentage of abortions occur at 21 weeks or later, contradicting DeSantis’s assertion. She also stated that there is no evidence of Democrats advocating for abortions up until that point.
Former President Donald Trump, the current front-runner in the GOP presidential race, has also refrained from endorsing a federal abortion ban. He once criticized DeSantis’s six-week abortion ban as being “too harsh.” However, Trump has proudly highlighted his role in nominating three Supreme Court justices, which ultimately contributed to the overturning of Roe v. Wade last summer.
