A Canadian Journalism Professor Faces Backlash for Controversial Tweet
A Canadian journalism professor recently faced criticism and backlash after making a controversial statement on social media. The professor, Katja Thieme, who is a faculty member at the University of British Columbia, locked down her X account (previously known as Twitter) following the incident.
The controversy began when former NCAA swimmer Riley Gaines, known for her advocacy for women’s sports and opposition to the transgender agenda, responded to Thieme’s tweet. Gaines was among many who criticized the professor for her statement.
In a now-private tweet, Thieme responded to a video of Gaines advocating for spaces for women by suggesting that parents should expose their children to the genitals of adults in a casual and normalized way. She also referred to Gaines as “whiny” and a “transphobe,” dismissing the concerns of female athletes uncomfortable with sharing locker rooms with males.
The tweet drew significant attention and prompted Thieme to switch her account to private. People expressed their outrage, with one person even suggesting that Thieme’s statement amounted to grooming. Gaines herself came across the reporting on Twitter and responded by stating that Thieme belongs in prison.

Gaines, who has personally experienced competing against transgender-identifying athletes and sharing locker rooms with them, has become a vocal advocate for protecting women and girls in sports and private spaces.

Neither Thieme nor the University of British Columbia has responded to the controversy surrounding the professor’s tweet. On her professional page, Thieme lists her gender pronouns and areas of study, which include gender and sexuality as well as political movements.
The incident has sparked a heated debate about the boundaries of free speech and the responsibilities of educators in expressing their opinions.
