Security Increased for Judge Overseeing Trump’s Trial
A new report reveals that security measures have been heightened for the judge presiding over former President Donald Trump’s trial on charges related to the 2020 election. U.S. District Court Judge Tanya Chutkan has been assigned additional security, and discussions regarding her safety were held by deputy U.S. Marshals.
The Marshals Service, responsible for court security, emphasized the importance of ensuring judges can rule independently and without intimidation. Marshals Service representative Drew Wade stated, “Ensuring the integrity of the federal judicial process is paramount to the rule of law.”
Trump has taken to social media to express his opposition to the charges and upcoming trial. On his Truth Social platform, he posted, ”Deranged Jack Smith is going before his number one draft pick, the Judge of his ‘dreams’ (WHO MUST BE RECUSED!), in an attempt to take away my FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHTS.”
In another post, Trump stated, “THERE IS NO WAY I CAN GET A FAIR TRIAL WITH THE JUDGE ‘ASSIGNED’ TO THE RIDICULOUS FREEDOM OF SPEECH/FAIR ELECTIONS CASE.”

Judge Chutkan has gained a reputation for her tough sentencing of Jan. 6 defendants and her rulings against Trump’s attempts to block the House’s Jan. 6 committee from accessing documents. Trump’s attorney, John Lauro, stated that no final decision has been made regarding seeking a different judge.
Trump’s comments regarding his First Amendment rights are part of an ongoing debate over a protective order, which outlines what a defendant can publicly say about the case. Special counsel Jack Smith’s team is requesting the adoption of its proposed protective order before the discovery phase begins.
The government’s court filing highlighted a social media post from Trump, stating, “IF YOU GO AFTER ME, I’M COMING AFTER YOU!” The filing expressed concerns that public posts using details obtained in discovery could have a chilling effect on witnesses or impact the fair administration of justice.
Trump’s legal team clarified that the comment was not directed at the judge in his election case.
