Poll: Abortion stance crucial for majority of voters.
The Importance of Abortion Policies in Voting
A recent poll conducted by CNN reveals that the majority of voters consider a political candidate’s stance on abortion to be a crucial factor when casting their vote. In fact, 55% of respondents stated that a candidate’s abortion policies are among the key factors they consider. Additionally, 29% of participants mentioned that they would only vote for a candidate who aligns with their personal beliefs on abortion. This brings the total number of individuals who prioritize a candidate’s stance on abortion to an impressive 84%.
A Shift in Public Opinion
Interestingly, the remaining 16% of respondents do not view abortion as a significant issue. This marks a record low since CNN began asking this question in 1996. However, the poll indicates that public opinion on the Supreme Court’s reversal of Roe v. Wade remains relatively unchanged compared to last year’s results.
Views on the Supreme Court’s Decision
According to the poll, 36% of voters agree with the high court’s ruling that there is no constitutional right to abortion, while 64% disagree with this opinion. Among those who support the overturning of Roe v. Wade, 34% believe that politicians who oppose abortion should advocate for further nationwide restrictions. On the other hand, 66% believe that politicians should leave this contentious issue up to the states.
It is worth noting that although a majority still favors state legislatures deciding on abortion restrictions, there has been a notable decrease in this sentiment over the past year. Last July, 80% of respondents believed that politicians should let states decide on abortion restrictions.
Concerns about Access to Abortion
Among those who disapprove of the Supreme Court’s ruling, a significant percentage feel that neither their state government (60%) nor the federal government (78%) is doing enough to ensure access to abortion.
These findings coincide with Ohio’s ongoing ballot measure, State Issue 1, which has significant implications for the future of abortion in the state. If approved, this measure would make it more challenging to pass future Ohio constitutional amendments related to abortion, as the majority needed for approval could be raised to 60% instead of the current 50% plus one person.
The CNN poll, conducted by SSRS from July 1-31, surveyed 1,279 U.S. adults. The margin of error for the poll is 3.7%.
