Hallmark Media CEO Wonya Lucas to Step Down

Hallmark Media CEO Wonya ⁤Lucas, who played​ a pivotal role in embracing more LGBTQ-friendly storylines,⁣ has​ announced her departure from the company.

According⁢ to a ceo-wonya-lucas-step-down-1235558874/” target=”_blank” rel=”noopener”>report published by The Hollywood Reporter on Tuesday, Lucas​ will ‌continue to serve on the ​Hallmark Media board of directors until the end of the year. ​Hallmark Companies CEO Mike Perry will oversee the transition as she ⁤exits.

In a statement, Lucas expressed her gratitude for leading the ​company and highlighted the progress made ⁢in creating an evolved entertainment experience that fosters meaningful and emotionally connected moments for⁣ audiences. She emphasized her unwavering passion for the Hallmark brand and her⁣ commitment to guiding⁤ Hallmark Media’s⁢ future in a more strategically focused capacity.

Lucas joined ⁢Hallmark from TV ⁣One in 2020, taking⁣ over⁣ from former CEO and President Bill Abbott after the controversy surrounding the removal of ⁢a commercial featuring a ⁣same-sex couple on Hallmark Channel. One of Lucas’‌ main priorities during her tenure‌ was to increase representation.

Her arrival followed a promise from Perry to collaborate with ‌GLAAD (Gay‍ and Lesbian Alliance Against ⁤Defamation)​ in order to create a⁣ more inclusive environment and promote diverse storylines. Under⁤ Lucas’ leadership,‍ the channel introduced several LGBTQ+‌ supporting characters and premiered its first feature film centered on a same-sex relationship.

However, alongside the‌ push for diversity and inclusivity, Lucas also witnessed the departure of⁢ several of the network’s biggest stars.

Candace Cameron Bure, known for her roles in ⁤holiday films and the​ Aurora Teagarden mystery‌ series, announced in 2022 that she would be joining​ ex-CEO Bill Abbott’s new venture, Great‍ American ⁤Family, which focuses on traditional marriage and faith-based storylines.

Other actors who made the transition from Hallmark to Great American Family include Trevor Donovan, Jennie Garth, Daniel Lissing, Lori ⁤Loughlin, and Jen Lilley.
