Congress gears up for a fiery post-recess clash as Biden pushes for over $10 billion to be sent to Ukraine.
A New Report: Biden Administration Seeks Additional $10 Billion in Aid for Ukraine
A new report from Punchbowl News reveals that the Biden administration is planning to request an additional billion in aid for Ukraine. This news comes despite Congress being on recess, with the request expected to be made in the coming week.
The report states that while the exact size of the aid package has not been defined, sources suggest it will be “north of $10 billion.” This would add to the $110 billion that has already been approved through Congress for Ukraine and its allies.
Support and Opposition
According to the Council on Foreign Relations, the U.S. has provided Ukraine with $3.9 billion in humanitarian assistance, $26.4 billion in financial assistance, and $46.6 billion in military aid as of July.
Former President Donald Trump has been known to oppose aid to Ukraine, but recent tests of support in Congress have shown critics of aid losing. Efforts to limit Ukraine’s aid have been rejected, including proposals to tie U.S. spending to that of NATO allies.
However, some Republicans have voiced their support for aid to Ukraine. Republican Rep. Joe Wilson of South Carolina stated, ”We know this is a worldwide war that we’re in of authoritarians versus democracies; this is not a war we chose, war criminal [Russian President Vladimir] Putin is the person who started the war.”
Republican Rep. Victoria Spartz of Indiana, who was born in Ukraine, emphasized the importance of supporting Ukraine as the front line of the war for freedom. She believes that helping Ukraine is in the national interest of the United States and crucial for deterring aggressors like China and Russia.
Heated Battle Ahead
The Biden administration’s request for additional aid to Ukraine sets the stage for a heated battle in Congress following the recess. With differing opinions on the matter, lawmakers will need to navigate the appropriations process and find common ground.
As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how Congress will respond to the Biden administration’s push for increased aid to Ukraine.
“Congress should not authorize another penny for Ukraine and push the Biden administration to pursue peace,” said Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who proposed limiting Ukraine’s aid.
