Los Angeles schools craft guide for elementary ‘Rainbow Clubs’ in support of LGBTQ+ liberation.
The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) Embraces LGBTQ+ Education
The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) has taken a proactive approach to LGBTQ+ education by creating a guide to organizing “Rainbow Clubs” for elementary school students. These clubs provide a safe and inclusive space for LGBTQ+ students and their friends to explore important topics and identities.
The district’s comprehensive document includes a 20-page “Rainbow Club Activity Guide” produced by LAUSD’s Human Relations, Diversity, and Equity department. This guide offers a wealth of discussion topics, lessons, and activities related to LGBTQ+ identity for elementary students.
The activity guide encourages students to engage in various forms of expression, including art, books, games, and other activities. It emphasizes the celebration of diverse identities, including Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Nonbinary, Queer, Questioning, Intersex, Ace, and Two Spirit identities.
Activism and Social Justice
One section of the guide titled “LGBTQ+ Liberation” delves into the importance of political activism and social justice. It defines activists as individuals who work to address unfairness in the world and collaborate with others to find solutions. The guide highlights the remarkable contributions of Sylvia Rivera and Marsha Johnson, two activists of color who founded the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries. It also explores the concept of protest art as a means of expression and change.
Exploring LGBTQ+ Representation
The guide encourages students to watch thought-provoking films, such as the short film about two male classmates who develop romantic feelings for each other. It prompts students to reflect on the importance of LGBTQ+ representation in media and entertainment.
Additionally, the guide suggests engaging activities like a Pride flag quiz to deepen students’ understanding of LGBTQ+ identities. It also encourages students to share their experiences attending Pride events and introduces them to the book “Twas The Night Before Pride,” which captures the excitement of a Pride parade. Students are even invited to unleash their creativity by designing their own Pride float.
Embracing LGBTQ+ Education
LAUSD’s commitment to LGBTQ+ education extends beyond the Rainbow Clubs. The district has previously encouraged students to celebrate Pride month through activities like drawing in “LGBTQ+ coloring books,” creating and distributing “ally pledge cards,” and playing “LGBTQ+ Bingo.” It has also incorporated lesson plans that promote understanding and acceptance of transgenderism.
As the second-largest public school system in the country, LAUSD recognizes the importance of fostering inclusivity and providing resources for LGBTQ+ students and their allies.
