Native American group threatens boycott if Washington Football Team doesn’t revert name to ‘Redskins’.
A Native American Group Threatens Boycott of Washington Commanders
A Native American group, the Native American Guardians Association (NAGA), has issued a strong warning to the Washington Commanders, demanding that the NFL team change its name back to the Washington Redskins. In a letter sent to the team’s ownership and key leadership, NAGA emphasized the need for the team to revitalize its relationship with the American Indian community.

The letter from NAGA addressed the “cancel culture” that has targeted the Native American population and highlighted the erasure of their significant role in American history. It also discussed the long-standing relationship between the Washington football team and the Native American community, dating back to their days as the Boston Redskins in 1933.
NAGA’s letter stated, “At this moment in history, we are formally requesting that the team revitalize its relationship with the American Indian community by (i) changing the name back to ‘The Redskins,’ which recognizes America’s original inhabitants, and (ii) using the team’s historic name and legacy to encourage Americans to learn about, not cancel, the history of America’s tribes and our role in the founding of this Great Nation.”
The group made it clear that they are prepared to take action if their demands are not met. They mentioned the possibility of a national boycott, similar to the one that impacted Anheuser Busch (Bud Light), resulting in a significant financial loss. NAGA emphasized that their approach would be peaceful, stating, “not one brick thrown, not one highway blocked, not one bridge burned.”
The letter concluded by asserting that in 2023, the oppression and disregard for U.S. history and constitutional rights are unacceptable. NAGA vowed to stand their ground, emphasizing the importance of acknowledging history to avoid repeating past mistakes.
In 2020, the team announced its decision to remove the name “Redskins” from its branding, and two years later, they unveiled the new name, the Washington Commanders. The name change was a response to pressure from the cancel culture movement, which claimed that the term ”Redskins” was racist and offensive to Native Americans.
