Hawaii’s Ban on Butterfly Knives Overturned
Hawaii’s long-standing ban on butterfly knives, also known as balisongs, has finally been overturned. In a groundbreaking decision, a three-judge panel at the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals unanimously declared the restriction unconstitutional.
Back in 1993, Hawaii first criminalized the carrying of butterfly knives, deeming them a potential threat. However, the law didn’t stop there. Six years later, the Hawaii Legislature expanded the ban, making it a misdemeanor for anyone to manufacture, sell, transfer, transport, or even own these blades. The reasoning behind this decision was the perceived social problem associated with these knives.
