House conservatives refuse Biden’s Ukraine funding request, calling it a ‘nonstarter’.

Conservative Republicans Reject‌ Biden’s Request for Increased Funding for Ukraine

President Joe Biden’s request ⁢for additional funding for Ukraine and other ⁢military assistance is facing opposition from conservative Republicans in the House. They⁣ are dismissing the effort as nonnegotiable.

Biden unveiled his ⁢highly anticipated request on Thursday, urging Congress to approve an extra $24 billion to‌ support Ukraine’s ongoing battle ‍against the ‍Russian government’s invasion. The request ‍includes $13 ⁢billion ⁣for security assistance‌ and $7.3 billion for‌ economic‍ and humanitarian efforts.⁢ However, House Republicans, who have‌ been cautious about providing more⁢ economic aid to the wartorn country, ⁢are gearing up for a ⁣battle.

Republicans Stand Firm Against⁢ the Request

“No. This⁣ should ‍be a non-starter for the House GOP,”⁣ stated Rep. ⁣Chip Roy (R-TX). “It’s time to stand up for Americans and against the uniparty.”

The funding proposal also seeks $12‌ billion for disaster relief and $3.3 billion to assist countries⁣ affected by the Russian invasion.⁣ Additionally, ‍$4 ⁤billion⁢ would be allocated for U.S. border security, bringing the⁤ total request to $40 billion.

While the request is expected to receive some bipartisan support in the House, ‌with several Republicans ⁤publicly ⁤expressing their desire to‍ continue funding Ukraine’s war effort, ⁢at least one senior GOP member doubts that Republicans have enough votes to pass the Ukraine supplemental without Democratic assistance.

“We still don’t have an accurate accounting of the $113 billion we have⁣ already sent to Ukraine,” said Rep.⁣ Matt Rosendale⁢ (R-MT). “With the disaster that ‌is taking place on our southern border, why are⁤ we even considering this?”

This sentiment is echoed among ⁢GOP voters, as recent polling⁣ from the Brookings‍ Institution shows a decrease ⁣in Republican support ⁣for providing financial assistance ‌to ‍Ukraine.⁣ Only 28% of Republicans compared to 62% of Democrats support increased aid.

On the ⁤other‍ hand, House Democrats are likely⁢ to support the legislation, with⁣ several⁣ members already commending Biden for his efforts to assist Ukraine while also ‌addressing the flow of fentanyl across the southern ⁤border.

“We applaud the Administration ‌for putting forward a⁤ supplemental funding request that addresses each of these important⁤ issues facing our nation,” said‍ Rep.‍ Annie Kuster (D-NH). “Now, Congress must get it across the finish⁤ line.”

It remains uncertain whether House Speaker Kevin ‌McCarthy (R-CA) will bring the ‍proposal to the floor for a vote. Earlier this year, McCarthy vowed that any Ukraine-related funding must go through the regular appropriations process rather than a ⁤supplemental aid request.

Reese Gorman‌ contributed to this ⁣report.
