Attorney General Merrick Garland Appoints Special Counsel in Hunter Biden Investigation
Attorney General Merrick Garland made an exciting announcement on Friday, revealing that he has appointed U.S. Attorney David Weiss as a special counsel in the investigation into Hunter Biden. This decision comes after Weiss himself requested the authority from Garland earlier this week.
“Upon considering his request, as well as the extraordinary circumstances relating to this matter, I have concluded that it is in the public interest to appoint him as special counsel,” Garland stated.
The investigation into Hunter Biden began in 2018 when federal investigators in Delaware initiated an inquiry. In 2019, they subpoenaed his now-infamous laptop from a repair shop as part of their investigation.
In June, U.S. Attorney David Weiss’s office reached a plea deal with Hunter Biden. The younger Biden pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor tax charges and entered into a pretrial diversion agreement to avoid a felony gun charge. However, this plea deal faced criticism from Republicans, who deemed it a “sweetheart” deal.
U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon added to the intrigue last month when she made a surprising decision to defer the deal. She expressed concerns about what she perceived as “unusual” provisions and the potential implications for future charges, including violations of the Foreign Agents Registration Act.
