Judge imposes protective order in Trump J6 case: He faces same restrictions as any other defendant.
Federal Judge Warns Trump: No Special Treatment in Prosecution
In a highly anticipated hearing regarding former President Donald Trump’s alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election, Judge Tanya Chutkan made it clear that she will not allow Trump to be treated differently than any other defendant. She issued a stern warning, stating that she will take action to prevent any attempts to intimidate witnesses or taint the jury pool.
Politics Have No Place in the Courtroom
Throughout the hearing, Judge Chutkan emphasized that politics will not interfere with the case. She firmly stated that Trump’s presidential campaign is no different than any other job and that he is to be regarded as a criminal defendant.
“He is a criminal defendant,” Judge Chutkan said. “He is going to have restrictions like every other criminal defendant. I will not allow him any greater or lesser latitude than any defendant in a criminal case.”
Protective Measures in Place
As part of the protective order sought by prosecutors, Trump is prohibited from having access to smartphones or any other devices capable of replicating sensitive materials. Additionally, his defense counsel must ensure that all sensitive materials are collected and safeguarded when he is not reviewing them.
The purpose of this order is not to silence Trump, but rather to prevent the release of discovery evidence that could potentially compromise ongoing investigations involving unindicted co-conspirators.

LAURO frustrated that government wants Trump’s team to ”babysit” the defendant. But Chutkan notes that Trump readily agreed to that condition in Florida so it undercuts defense argument here.

A Word of Caution
The judge also issued a warning to Trump’s legal team regarding statements made outside of the courtroom. Trump’s recent post on Truth Social, stating “IF YOU GO AFTER ME, I’M COMING AFTER YOU,” raised concerns. While Trump’s team claims it was directed at politicians and unrelated to the case, Judge Chutkan urged caution.
“I do want to issue a general word of caution,” she said. “I intend to ensure the orderly administration of justice in this case, and even arguably ambiguous statements by the parties or their counsel. I caution you and your client to take special care in your public statements in this case. I will take whatever measures are necessary to protect the integrity of these proceedings.”
